Rescue Series History

The first Lifesaving World Championships took place in 1910 under the responsibility of the Fédération Internationale de Sauvetage Aquatique (FIS). They were were organised on an annual basis and were pool and open water competitions.

At the creation of World Life Saving (WLS) in 1974, beach and surf competitions took place on a regular basis. Starting from 1981 the event became globalised through the 'Rescue Series'.

Ever since the merger in 1994 of FIS and WLS into ILS, the Lifesaving World Championships are organised under the authority of ILS.
